Knowing how to power wash your house siding safely makes a huge visual difference to your home’s exterior, but siding is more delicate than concrete and the wrong technique can force water behind panels and cause real damage. Here’s how to do it without the risk.

What You’ll Need

A pressure washer with adjustable pressure settings, a wide fan-tip nozzle (40 degrees is safest for siding), a siding-safe cleaning solution, and a garden hose for rinsing if needed. Lower pressure settings are strongly preferred for siding compared to concrete.

Know Your Siding Type

Vinyl siding generally handles pressure washing well at lower settings. Wood siding requires extra caution since high pressure can strip paint or force water into seams. Stucco and brick are durable but should still be washed at a moderate setting to avoid damaging mortar joints.

Step 1 — Protect Nearby Areas

Close all windows and doors tightly, and cover any outdoor electrical outlets. Trim back plants touching the siding so you have clear access.

Step 2 — Apply Cleaning Solution First

Apply a siding-safe cleaner from the bottom up using a low-pressure setting or a separate sprayer, and let it sit for the time specified on the product label, usually 10-15 minutes.

Step 3 — Wash From the Top Down

When rinsing, work from the top of the house downward, angling the spray slightly downward as well. This follows the natural overlap of siding panels and prevents forcing water up underneath them.

Step 4 — Keep a Safe Distance

Hold the nozzle at least 12-18 inches from the siding and never aim directly into seams, vents, or window edges where water could get pushed behind the surface.

Step 5 — Rinse Thoroughly

After washing, do a final rinse pass with plain water to remove any leftover cleaning solution, which can leave streaks if left to dry on the surface.
