Learning how to fix a broken window screen is a quick repair that keeps bugs out and saves you from buying a whole new screen. Most screen damage — tears, holes, or frames that have come apart — can be fixed in under 30 minutes with inexpensive materials.

Assess the Damage

Small holes under an inch can be patched without replacing the whole screen. Larger tears or screens with bent or broken frames need the screen mesh replaced entirely. A badly bent frame should be replaced — they’re inexpensive and available at any hardware store cut to size.

What You’ll Need for a Full Re-Screen

New screen mesh (fiberglass is easiest for beginners), a screen rolling tool (spline roller), new spline (the rubber cord that holds the mesh in the frame), a utility knife, and scissors.

Step 1 — Remove the Old Screen

Pry out the old spline from the groove around the frame using a flathead screwdriver. The old mesh will lift right out once the spline is removed.

Step 2 — Cut New Mesh

Cut the new mesh about an inch larger than the frame on all sides. This gives you material to work with as you install it.

Step 3 — Roll in the Spline

Lay the mesh over the frame, centering it. Use the convex wheel of the spline roller to press the mesh into the groove along one side, then use the concave wheel to press the spline on top of it, locking the mesh in place. Work one side at a time, keeping the mesh taut but not stretched so tight it distorts.

Step 4 — Trim the Excess

Once all four sides are done, run a utility knife along the outside edge of the spline groove to trim away the excess mesh for a clean finish.

Patching a Small Hole

For small holes, apply a small piece of self-adhesive screen patch tape directly over the damage, or use a dab of clear nail polish on very small holes to seal them immediately.
